Weekly Update 15.10.21

Mrs Trotter (l.trotter) on: Maple Tree Class Blog

Hi everyone,

We have been busy planning our sights and sounds poem this week. Using our trip to Armley Mills as inspiration the children have completed a word bank that describes the sights and sounds of a Victorian mill. These educational visits are so valuable to learning and we still have more writing opportunities based on the trip ahead. Below are just a few of the fantastic examples of the diary entries from the past few weeks that have been written in the role of a Victorian school child.

In my maths group we have been investigating the order of operations (BIDMAS / BODMAS). We had a challenging first lesson but everyone quickly consolidated their knowledge and made amazing progress by the end of the week. Next stop....fractions, decimals and percentages.

In Art, the class was introduced to the famous Victorian artist and designer William Morris and his intricate nature inspired designs. We will be looking into his method of block printing to see if we can create some new designs.

It has been lovely to speak to so many parents this week. Thank you for your patience when some of the video calls didn't quite go to plan.

The sun is currently shining. Fingers crossed it stays that like that over the weekend.

Hi,

We have been really focused on our writing this week. The diary entries the children have completed in the role of a Victorian school child are fantastic and have been the result of several weeks preparation involving, creating a word bank, related reading comprehensions and lots of great discussions. Miss Tidey visited our class this week and was very impressed with both the standard of work and the overall attitude of the whole class. I will be sharing some of the completed work shortly.

I am really looking forward to speaking to lots of parents next week to share what great work the children have been doing.

Have a great weekend. Hope it's sunny.

Mrs Trotter

Weekly Update 1.10.21

Hi,

Following our trip to Armley Mills last week, we have been using the experience to plan and begin to write a diary entry in the role of  a Victorian school child. We investigated the different type of word classes we would need to use and I have been really impressed with the great range of vocabulary the children have included. The introductions to the diary entry are fabulous and I'm looking forward to sharing some of the completed diary entries on the blog next week.

In maths, we have been using negative numbers and have been solving problems using short division. It was also lovely to see Mr Smith as he introduced the science topic of Forces. We will be continuing this topic with some practical investigations over the next few weeks.

Mr Wood from Benton Park visited Year 6 to inform them about the forthcoming virtual open evening. The children will be bringing home some information about this on Friday.

Have a great weekend.

Mrs Trotter
