Weekly Update 10.2.2023

We have reached the end of Spring 1!
The highlight of the week was Superhero Day. As part of this day all the children created their own comic strip story of 'Supertato' and decorated their own Supertato.
In maths we have continued to learn about the numbers 0 -100 and have completed lots of practical maths work. We have focused on finding one more and one less than a given number within 100 and have explored how two digit numbers are made of tens and ones.
This week is Online Safety Week. As a class we discussed all the fun ways that we can use the internet but also discussed the importance of asking an adult before going on the internet and telling an adult if we see something that upsets us online. We encourage you to discuss online safety at home and information can be found here: https://saferinternet.org.uk/guide-and-resource/parents-and-carers
Thank you to everyone who made an appointment for Parents' Evening. It was lovely to be able to share the children's work and to hear how the children are finding Year One.
I hope you all have a good half term break and I will see you again on Monday 20th February.

Weekly Update 4.2.2023

We have had a slightly sad end to the week in Pear Tree Class as today was Miss Peacock's last day at Rufford Park Primary School. The staff and children are all going to miss her but wish her lots of luck for her new job as a teaching assistant in a school a bit closer to home.
In other news, in art the children created watercolour wash backgrounds, in the style of Paul Klee, and experimented with line drawing to create their own portraits. Take a look at our display, showcasing this wonderful work:
We reflected on our paramedic visit that happened last week and discussed whether we think paramedics are real life superheroes (all the children agreed that they definitely are!)
In English, we continued to write about our new class book 'Supertato'. The children used key vocabulary from the story to write their own sentences. A lot of children challenged themselves to use a range of punctuation including question marks and exclamation marks.
In maths we have started to learn about division and have completed a lot of practical work when learning how to share equally between groups.
Just a reminder that next Wednesday (8th February 2023) is our Superhero Day where we celebrate all our topic learning of the half term. All the children are invited to come to school dressed as a superhero of their choice. I look forward to seeing their costumes!
Have a lovely weekend and I will see you again on Monday for the last week of the half term!

In maths the children have been learning how to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. We have done a lot of practical maths this week by making groups of 2, 5 and 10 objects and counting how many there are altogether. There have been some good discussions about the patterns that we can see and how we know if we will say a number, just by looking at the digits the number ends in.
In science this week we have continue learning about materials. The children learnt that different materials are used for different uses, depending on the properties of the material. We went for a walk around the school grounds to see which materials have been used to make different objects and to discuss why we think these materials were chosen.
In English, the children have retold the story of 'Traction Man'. As a class, we acted out different parts of the story, created our own story map and said every sentence before we started writing. All the children produced work of a high quality and wrote independently. I am very proud of the progress they have made.
Please remember that Monday 23rd January is a training day, so school will be closed to children. I will see you again on Tuesday 24th January.
