Pear Tree Class Blog 2021- 2024

Weekly Update 22.6.23

K Atkinson (k.atkinson) on: Pear Tree Class Blog 2021- 2024

A slightly shorter week has come to an end.

In DT the children each made their own bunting flag using their design they made last week. A selection of these flags will be displayed in an art exhibition in Guiseley Theatre from Monday 26th June.

In English the children each wrote their own riddle about a sea creature. The quality of the work produced was very high and the children enjoyed trying to guess the answer to each other's riddles.

In maths we have continued learning about how to measure mass in cubes. The children worked in groups to measure the mass of different objects from around the classroom.

We have also had some exciting developments in the metamorphosis of our caterpillars. All the caterpillars have formed their chrysalis and we are now waiting for them to emerge as butterflies.

Enjoy the weekend and see you again on Monday.

Weekly Update 16.6.23

A hot and sunny week has come to an end!

In science we are learning about metamorphosis; specifically how caterpillars transform into butterflies. We have our own caterpillars in class that we are observing each week and recording their changes in our own butterfly diaries. The caterpillars are already on their way to becoming butterflies and have started forming their chrysalides.

In English we have continued learning about 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley'. We took advantage of the good weather by going out onto the playground to act out parts of the story. The children then each wrote their own recount from the point of view of Stanley.

This week all the children completed the year one phonics screening check. This is a statutory assessment that measures how well children are using their phonics to read. All the children have made such fantastic progress with their reading since the start of the year and I was so impressed with their reading when completing the check.

Enjoy the sunny weather and I'll see you again on Monday,

Miss Atkinson

Weekly Update 9.6.23

We have had a fantastic first week back.

Our topic this half term is 'The Seaside' and we completed our first topic lesson looking at what the seaside is and sorting photos according to whether they showed the seaside or Yeadon.

On Tuesday the children enjoyed an assembly by 'The Music Man' informing them of the different musical instruments that they can sign up to learn in school time during the next academic year. Letters were sent home with information about how your child can sign up for this. More information can be found here, if you're interested: https://www.mfsf.org.uk/parentinformation

We read 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley' by Sarah Roberts, which is our core English text for this half term. A read aloud version of this book can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sF1-ZTRydlM.

On Wednesday we also completed a PSHE lesson about perseverance and growth mindset. The children worked in teams to complete the (intentionally difficult) task of building the tallest tower, using only 6 pieces of paper. I was impressed with the children's creativity and how they tried different approaches when things didn't go as plan the first time.

Enjoy the weekend and see you again on Monday,

Miss Atkinson
