A busy and fun half term has come to an end. This week the children enjoyed the good weather and went outside on a tree hunt around the school grounds. They used leaf identification sheets to identify different deciduous and evergreen trees. We managed to find ash, sycamore, oak, holly, hazel and beech trees.
In maths we have recapped what the equals symbol means and learnt how to move the equals symbol around when writing addition number sentences.
In PSHE we continued learning about the importance of a balanced diet and the children each designed their own packed lunch with a mix of fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates and proteins.
Monday and Wednesday will still be our PE days after the holidays.
I hope you all have a lovely week and I will see you again on Monday 5th June for the final half term of Year One!

We have had a very exciting and busy week.
The children have done a lot of DT this week as they have finished their DT projects. All the children created their own lunchbox for Pirate Paddy. We enjoyed testing our lunchboxes on Thursday morning by sending each lunchbox down a line to imitate the passage from one pirate ship to another, threw water at the lunchboxes to imitate waves and threw balls at the lunchboxes to imitate seagulls pecking. Nearly every lunchbox was in tact at the end showing how well the children listened to the design criteria to make the lunchbox strong and waterproof.
On Friday morning the children learnt about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores as part of their science lesson. The children each dissected (fake) poo and had to work out which type of animal the poo belonged to.
As part of our topic work we have started to learn the names of the five oceans of the world. We have been listening to the following song to help with this:

A reminder that Wednesday 24th May is School Photo Day. Please send your child to school in their normal school uniform on this day, instead of in their PE kit.
Enjoy the weekend,

Another week has gone by very quickly!
In maths we have recapped how to solve division problems by sharing equally as well as how to find half and a quarter of a quantity.
In science we have continued learning about animals. We recapped how animals can be categorised according to whether they are mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians or fish. We also discussed how animals change from offspring to adults.
In DT the children all designed their own pirate lunchbox and will be making this lunchbox next week. Please send any cardboard boxes and plastic punnets into school by Monday to help the children make their designs.
To help beat a world record for the most pledges received for an exercise campaign within one month all the children in Pear Tree ran or walked one mile around the Key Stage 2 playground and around the lower field. Every child in class participated in this challenge and all showed great stamina and perseverance.
Enjoy the weekend,
Miss Atkinson
