Weekly Update 17.6.2022

K Atkinson (k.atkinson) on: Pear Tree Class Blog

The most exciting thing to happen this week in our class has definitely been our trip to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park!

This trip has really helped to bring our topic of 'African Adventure' to life and allowed the children to see some of the 'Big 5' animals that they learnt about last week. All the children were so well behaved and the trip led to some interesting discussions about different animals. I am sure you had some very tired children on Wednesday night! Next week we have an African Drumming workshop to look forward to.

In maths the children have started to learn about weight by comparing the weight of two different objects using the vocabulary of 'lighter', 'heavier' and 'equal' and they have measured the weight of objects using scales and cubes.

In science the children have learnt about different habitats and the animals that live there. Every child researched a habitat using fact files, photographs and books. All the children produced some very high quality work and could recall facts about what they had learnt.

Just a reminder that now the weather is getting hotter please make sure you put sun cream on your child before they arrive at school and that they bring a sun hat to school to help keep them cool.

This week all children are bringing home a book to commemorate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee called  'Queen Elizabeth - A Platinum Jubilee Celebration'. This is theirs to keep so it does not need to be returned to school!

Enjoy the weekend.

Weekly Update 9.6.2022

K Atkinson (k.atkinson) on: Pear Tree Class Blog

The first week back has flown by! All the children have settled back into our routines as if they have never been away and they all seem very happy to be back at school.

In English we have started learning about our new book 'Lila and the Secret of Rain' by David Conway. The children used the cover and the blurb to make predictions about what they thought the story was going to be about. After reading the book the children then wrote thought bubbles for main characters and also wrote questions that they would like to ask characters from the story.

In maths we have spent some time recapping addition and subtraction and exploring the relationship between these two operations.

At the start of the week we finished off our famous sculptors unit of work from last half-term. The children worked in groups to create their own sculpture inspired the theme 'family' in the style of Barbara Hepworth. We then took our sculptures outside to display and reflect on our hard work.

Next week Year 1 will be visiting the Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Wednesday 15th June. A letter has been sent home with further details about the trip. If you have any questions about the trip you can email the Pear class email address or I will be around after school on Monday and Tuesday evenings, if you'd like to talk face to face.

Have a lovely weekend and I will see you again on Monday,

Miss Atkinson

Weekly Update 27.5.2022

We have had a lovely end to the half-term in Pear class.

In maths the children have continued learning about o'clock and half past and reading these times on an analogue clock. We have also continued learning about Africa, specifically what a typical child's day looks like in rural Kenya.

Today all the children have enjoyed celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Every child has created their own crown that they have worn around the classroom and have also decorated their own bun. We have had a lot of discussions about how they are going to be celebrating next week and I am very impressed with the facts that they could recall about the Queen!

I hope you all have a happy break and enjoy celebrating next week.

See you again on Monday 6th June,

Miss Atkinson, Miss Bird and Miss Peacock
