Weekly Update 10.11.23

Miss Cotterill (e.cotterill) on: Lime Tree Class Blog 2022 - 2024

Hello!

It was great to welcome so many smiling faces back on Monday. We have had a good week in Lime Tree.

In English this half term we are looking at Fantasy Stories. Our focus text for the next few weeks is 'Where the Wild Things Are'. This week we have been making predictions and writing a description about one of the Wild Things. The children have been using adjectives and expanded noun phrases in their descriptive sentences.

In Maths Year 1 have been looking at the different practical resources we can use to help us when solving addition number sentences. Today the children had to choose the resource (tens frames, part-whole model or number line) that they are most confident with to solve lots of addition problems. Year 2 have continued to work on addition and subtraction. They have been adding by making 10 and adding to the next 10. This week's homework is reinforcing this learning. Any recapping on quick recall of number bonds to 10 and 20 at home would be amazing!

Our topic this half term is called Colour Chaos and is linked to our Art. We will be going into an artist time machine and learning all about them and their Art. Our first lesson was about Pier Mondrian and we focused on the use of primary colours when creating a Mondrian style mosaic.

In Science we did a one off lesson about the seasons and the season of Autumn which we are in now. We went on an Autumn walk and looked for all the signs of this season. We also discussed how the hours of daylight and the temperature has changed.

Have a lovely weekend.

Weekly Update 27.10.23

Miss Cotterill (e.cotterill) on: Lime Tree Class Blog 2022 - 2024

Hello!

We have made it to the end of our first half term!

We have had a lovely final week in Lime Tree. Everyone has really impressed me with their Samuel Pepys diary entries about the Great Fire of London. There was some super use of the facts that we have learnt.

In Maths Year 1 have been working on number bonds to 10 and how to find them systematically with the use of tens frames. Year 2 have been adding and subtracting 1's from a 2-digit number with the support of base 10.

In PE we put our throwing and catching skills in to practice by playing team games. It was great to see just how much the children's skills have developed over this unit.

Thank you to everyone who put in the time to practise our Buckingham Palace poem at home. Today all the classes in KS1 performed the poem to each other and then sang London's burning in a round.

We have finished the week with some Halloween stencil printing and golden time. I think everyone is ready for a rest now!

Have a lovely week and I will see you on Monday 6th November :)

Weekly Update 20.10.23

Miss Cotterill (e.cotterill) on: Lime Tree Class Blog 2022 - 2024

Hello!

We have been very busy this week with more Great Fire of London learning. On Tuesday we had a special box delivered to Lime Tree Class. Inside the box was Samuel Pepys’ diary about the Great Fire of London. We read his diary entries together and highlighted the Important features: The date/time, written in first person, time words, in order, past tense and includes feelings. We also transformed ourselves in to Samuel Pepys and thought tracked how we would feel during the fire. Next week we will be writing our own diary entries in character.

For our Topic lesson we looked at what happened after the fire and how London was rebuilt differently.

In Science we looked at the importance of personal hygiene. The children were able to share lots of examples of personal hygiene and why it is needed.

In Art we finished our Great Fire of London silhouette painting - they look really effective and will be going on display for the rest of the school to see.

In Maths Year 1 have been working on bonds to 7, 8 and 9 using numicon. Year 2 have been looking at related facts and number bonds to 100.

Have a lovely weekend.

Weekly Update 13.10.23

Miss Cotterill (e.cotterill) on: Lime Tree Class Blog 2022 - 2024

Hello!

A slightly shorter week with our training day today but still a very busy week it has been.

On Tuesday and Wednesday we had our Great Fire of London Workshops lead by forest school practitioner Sue. We recreated the events of the fire by making our very own Tudor houses from cereal boxes, scrap paper and paint. We then took them down to the field and made Pudding Lane with St Paul’s Cathedral in the center. Sue then started a fire in Thomas Farriner’s bakery, and we watched it spread from house to house until they had all turned to ash. The children really enjoyed this immersive activity!

London Burning    Water Squirters    Creating a Fire Break

In Maths Year 1 have been working on number bonds within 10 and using practical resources such as numicon to help with addition. Year 2 have been looking at number bonds to 20 and how to find all of the number pairs systematically.

In Science we have continued with our focus on how to keep the human body healthy. This weeks lesson was all about healthy hearts and how exercise is a very important factor in keeping it healthy. We looked at the function of the heart and did a little experiment to show how exercise effects our heart rate.

Have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you all at Parents Evening on Monday or Wednesday.

Weekly Update 06.10.23

Miss Cotterill (e.cotterill) on: Lime Tree Class Blog 2022 - 2024

Hello!

The first week of October has come with lots of rain but its been another good week in Lime Tree Class.

In Maths Year 1 have been introduced to a part-whole model. They have been using the part-whole model and numicon to create and solve addition number sentences. Year 2 have been using the 'less than', 'greater than' and 'equal to' symbols (< > = ) to compare objects and number. The children really enjoyed watching the numberblocks 'Blockzilla' episode which represented their learning in a fun way. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0blsqtz/numberblocks-series-3-blockzilla

In English we have finished our final week on 'Katie in London' with setting descriptions of Buckingham Palace. There has been some great use of adjectives and expanded noun phrases from both Year 1 and 2.

For our topic lesson this week we recapped on the timeline of the Great Fire of London and enquired how we know so much about the fire. We then looked at who Samuel Pepys was and read some of his diary.

In Science we have been looking at the importance of a healthy balanced diet. The children all made very sensible choices when creating their own balanced meal.

Thank you to everyone for bringing in boxes! I think we will definitely have enough for our Great Fire of London workshop which is taking place next Tuesday and Wednesday :)

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Cotterill
