Hi,
In English this week we have resumed our work on newspaper writing which we started before half term. The children have been reminding themselves how a newspaper report is organised by completing a newspaper reading comprehension and we have also practised some of the grammatical features we will be using in our writing.
In maths, Miss Bairstow's group have continued with their work on fractions by looking at how to add and subtract mixed numbers. Mrs Trotter and Mrs Senior's groups have been learning about area.
The big highlight of this week was celebrating World Book Day on Thursday. It was lovely to see so many children (and staff!) participate in dressing up as their favourite book character and come together to celebrate a love of books and reading.
Here are Ash Tree all dressed up:
We would also like to say a big thank you to everyone who kindly donated books for the book swap and to the PTA for organising this.
All children received a World Book Day token yesterday too which can be redeemed in certain shops for a FREE book. There are 12 completely free books to choose from this year or alternatively the children can redeem their voucher against a full price book to knock £1 off the cost.
The nearest places to redeem the vouchers this year are:

Vouchers can also be redeemed in any large Sainsbury's (not local stores), large Tesco (not express stores), Waterstones or WHSmith.
There are several other independent bookshops in Ilkley/Harrogate where you can redeem tokens too. You can use the search function here to find alternative participating retailers from further afield.
Have a great weekend and enjoy reading your new books!

Hello and happy half term!
This half term has been incredibly busy and we are really pleased with the children's efforts and progress. It has been 7 weeks since we returned from the Christmas break and we are all ready for a well deserved break - particularly Year 6 who have been completing some assessments again this week. They have approached these with great attitudes and enthusiasm and their hard work this term has paid off.
Year 5 enjoyed their time in the classroom whilst Year 6 were otherwise engaged and had a sneak preview of some of the grammar objectives we will be covering next half term. They also completed some problem solving challenges in maths as part of a team and I was really impressed with their focus and determination when completing these tasks.
Please remember it is World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March (the first Thursday back after half term!) and we are encouraging children to dress up to celebrate.
There are lots of ideas for costumes on the WBD website: https://www.worldbookday.com/dressing-up-ideas/
Costumes don't have to be a big investment - often the best costumes are homemade so perhaps you could allocate some time in your half term to get creative and make something!
This year, we are requesting that children bring in the book that features their character to have on their desk. Children are more than welcome to borrow a book from the school library or bring in a book from home but the important thing is that they bring the book with them on the day so that we can share and celebrate a range of books and stories.
Have a fabulous half term and see you all in a week's time!
Miss Bairstow :)

Hello,
We have had a slightly quieter week with less visitors but the children have continued to work hard as we approach the end of a long half term!
In English, we have been identifying features of newspaper reports as we prepare to write our own next week.
In maths, Miss Bairstow's group have been converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa.
Mrs Trotter and Mrs Senior's groups have been looking at different aspects of measurement.
Lots of children in UKS2 represented the school in sports events this week. Please have a look at the links below for photos/further details if your child took part in these events.
U11 Football v Yeadon St Peter and Paul 7 February 2022
Leeds Cross-Country Finals: Tuesday 8 February 2022
Thank you to all parents/carers who attended parents' evening appointments this week. It was nice to return to some normality and welcome you into school for this for the first time in two years!
Have a good weekend.
