Weekly Update 15.10.21

Miss Bairstow (d.bairstow) on: Ash Tree Class Blog

Hi everyone,

It has been another very busy week in school but I am pleased with how hard Ash Tree are continuing to work.

In English, we have been learning about onomatopoeia and the features of poetry in preparation for writing some poems of our own next week. In Maths, Miss Bairstow's group have been applying their understanding of formal methods for addition and subtraction to solve word problems. I was particularly impressed with their excellent, resilient attitudes when things became a little bit harder and the progress they made this week. Mrs Trotter's groups have been focusing on the order of operations and applying the principles of BIDMAS/BODMAS to solving problems.

It has been great to see so many members of Ash Tree get involved in sporting activities this week too! Several members of our class represented the school at a cross country event on Thursday and others at a football match on Tuesday evening. Please check the sports news section of the school website here if your child took part and you would like to hear more about these events.

See you next week!

Weekly Update 8.10.21

Miss Bairstow (d.bairstow) on: Ash Tree Class Blog

Hi,

This week we have been enjoying reading some more of our guided reading text, Street Child and have been making links between the descriptions in the book and the things we experienced for ourselves at Armley Mills. Reading is so important and once again we would like to promote the benefits reading a wide range of age appropriate texts can have on children's learning. Below are links to recommended read lists for Year 5 and 6. If your child is unsure of what to read next, discussing some of these at home and perhaps seeing how many they have already read would be a great place to start.

Year 6 Book List

In English, we have been completing our diary entries written in role as a Victorian child. I have been really impressed when reading the children's work as they are very imaginative!

In maths, Miss Bairstow's group have been looking at formal methods for addition and subtraction and Mrs Trotter/Mrs Senior's groups have been working on negative, prime and square numbers.

Weekly Update 1.10.21

Hi everyone,

We have had a great week in Ash Tree and have enjoyed reflecting on last week's trip to support us with our writing. We have started writing diary entries from the perspective of a Victorian child and I think all the children are glad to have been born now instead of back then! Here are a couple of photos of all of Year 5 and 6 in their Victorian costumes.

If you would like to see the full selection of highlights from our trips to Armley Mills please click here

In Maths, we have been finishing off our unit on place value with some work on negative numbers and Roman numerals and have just moved on to practising formal methods of addition.

Today, Y6 were visited by a member of staff from Benton Park as the time is coming up to make a decision about secondary schools for next year. Children will be coming home with an invitation to attend a virtual open evening event.
