Weekly Update 10.2.23

K Simms (k.simms) on: Willow Tree Class Blog

Hello everyone,

It was lovely seeing you all at parents' evening this week and I hope you can agree how much progress the children have made this academic year!

We have had a busy week finishing off many of our topics for this half term! We have completed our volcanoes work by painting our volcanoes, looking at the causes of earthquakes and tsunamis and finding out lots more information about different types of volcanoes in our Guided Reading sessions.

In our English sessions this week, we have finished our leaflets which aim to persuade people to stay safe online. This has fit in seamlessly with our work throughout Internet Safety Week and more information about how to stay safe online can be found here https://saferinternet.org.uk/guide-and-resource/parents-and-carers

There will be no homework set this week but we encourage children to continue practising their times tables on TT Rockstars (a reminder of usernames and passwords will be sent home tonight) and their number bonds and addition and subtraction skills on Hit the Button.

Please keep reading at home, anything and everything should be recorded in your child's reading record. I will be sending home some book reviews for the children to complete if they wish to share anything they have read and we will be using these as part of our vote to choose the next class story.

Have a restful week,

Miss Simms

Weekly Update 3.2.22

K Simms (k.simms) on: Willow Tree Class Blog

Hello everyone,

We have had another good week in Willow Tree Class but today has been by far the most exciting! After celebrating lots of achievements in Celebration Assembly we spent the morning adding the final pieces of papier mâché to our volcanoes to make them look more textured. Then, we walked down to the field to watch a real life eruption take place, which was rather exciting! (The eruption was definitely not to scale…).

In the afternoon, we learnt all about the importance of composting and how it can help us to give plants the right nutrients to grow. Once we found out why we needed to compost, we set about building our own compost bin! We will be adding the worms next week so that children who want to use these at home will be able to get started with them straight away.

It has certainly been a busy day and we look forward to next week when we produce our Online Safety leaflets, investigate perimeter and paint our volcanoes. I also look forward to seeing you all at Parents' Evening. If you have not yet booked an appointment, please do so as soon as possible.

Homework will be sent home tonight and is due in on Wednesday. We are finding more and more children are reading at least 5 times each week but we would really like to see every child in the class achieving this.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Miss Simms

Weekly Update 27.1.23

K Simms (k.simms) on: Willow Tree Class Blog

Hello everyone,

The children have been working hard this week during our new topics of learning! I have been really impressed with how much effort the children have been putting into our class discussions and independent work and it is clear to see they are really enjoying their time at school!

In maths, we have been using centimetres and millimetres to measure items around the classroom and we have looked at the importance of making sure to measure from 0 on a ruler to keep our results accurate. We even had a go at converting lengths from metres to centimetres by multiplying by 100 (including decimal numbers!).

In English, we have begun looking at persuasive writing and the children have had a go at creating their own rhetorical questions, exaggerations and phrases to portray emotions. Doesn't that sound good?

Homework will be sent home today and will be due in next Thursday. We will also be changing reading records on Thursday which will give children more time to ensure they have read at least 5 times.

Finally, a reminder about our plans for World Book Day which is coming up in March. We recently sent a letter to all parents detailing our plans to hold a decorate a t shirt theme for the first time. Please see below. We kindly ask that all financial contributions are made by next Thursday (Thursday 2nd February) to allow us an appropriate length of time to order t shirts and the resources required to decorate them (and of course to give the children chance to decorate them before WBD!). We have received some queries this week regarding sizing for t shirts - please note all children will receive an oversized t shirt as this will give them much more space for their book cover design and ensure every child in school has a suitable t shirt to wear.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Simms
