Weekly Update - 20.9.24

Posted: Sep 20, 2024 by: Miss Bairstow (d.bairstow) on: Ash Tree Class Blog

Hello!

This week we have been busy learning about WW2 to prepare for our exciting trip next week! In our topic lesson we learnt about the outbreak of WW2 and which countries were primarily involved. We then identified allied, axis, axis-controlled and neutral countries on a world map. In English, we have been looking at images and video footage of evacuees arriving at the stations in their masses as part of "Operation Pied Piper". We have been writing descriptive sentences and paragraphs to describe these scenes.

In maths, both Mrs Trotter's group and my group have been revisiting place value.

Y5 also had some Phase 1 Scootability training on the school playground on Wednesday morning. According to the instructors they were incredibly well behaved and a credit to the school so well done Year 5!

Our WW2 trip is now next week. Please make sure you have given consent for this visit via ParentPay or your child will be unable to come on the visit. If you are having difficulties finding this on ParentPay or in paying for the trip, please contact the office to give verbal/written consent via them instead.

Please also see the information below that was communicated to parents in the Summer term about our upcoming trips to the Worth Valley Railway as part of our WWII topic.

As part of the Autumn term’s work on WW2, we are planning to take the children in Year 5 and Year 6 on an educational visit to the Worth Valley Railway in Keighley. During the day, the children will dress and spend the day as wartime evacuees. They will complete two workshops whilst visiting the two museums on site and learn about rationing and RAF code breaking. They will also get to experience a journey along the Worth Valley Railway on a steam train as part of the evacuee experience.

The date for the trip is Wednesday 25th September 2024. This is for all children in Oak (Y5), Ash (Y5/6) and Maple (Y6).

Children do not need to arrive at school early for this visit, and we will be back for the end of the school day.

We encourage all children to come dressed as evacuees to make the visit as authentic as possible. Please be assured that there is no need for costumes to be expensive or bought especially for the occasion. School uniforms and clothes that the children already have can easily be worn for the day with slight adaptations. There are a few sample ideas/suggestions below.

Boys: Dark trousers or shorts (no jeans), white shirt with a collar. If available, a flat cap would be great and a cardigan/jumper/tank top or jacket with black or brown shoes (school shoes are ideal!).

Girls: Simple pinafore style dress or school skirt and a white blouse. Cardigans/tank tops or jackets can also be worn. Long socks or tights and brown or black shoes (school schools are again ideal!). If available, a beret would be great and hair in plaits or tied back with a ribbon or headband.

We will be making evacuee labels to wear on the trip in school in September, so you do not need to provide one for your child as part of their costume.

(Please scroll down for some pictures of costume ideas!)

Please note the children will require a packed lunch for the day. If your child is in receipt of Free School Meals and you would like a packed lunch providing, please inform the school office in September.

Have a lovely weekend!

Miss Bairstow :)
