Weekly Update-17/5/24

Posted: May 16, 2024 by: Mr Kyriacou (n.kyriacou) on: Beech Tree Blog

Hello everyone,

This week, in maths, we have continued our unit of work around money and the children have been comparing different amounts of money, estimating with money, and calculating with money.

In science, we have continued with our unit of work on plants. Our lesson focused on seeds and understanding what seeds, seedlings and germination are. We also set up an experiment to see whether a seed can germinate with just water and warmth. The children have been really enjoying this unit of work and love observing the different changes that they can see each day. We have also been continuing to write down our measurements for a previous ongoing experiment involving 4 pots with different amounts of seeds in, which get the same amount of water and light. The results are very interesting so far. The children are also enjoying watching their own individual sunflowers grow and it’s lovely to hear them using good scientific language.

In art, we have continued with our unit of work based on Ancient Egyptian death masks. This week, the children were learning about why death masks were used and what they were made of. Then, together as a class, the children applied the skills they have learnt in previous lessons to draw a death mask in pen. The children began in pencil, making sure all the features were placed correctly and were as accurate as possible. They then applied the shading on the face and after that, they finally used the pens to draw over their pencil image, apply different types of shading and then fill in any block colours that were required for the head piece. The end results were absolutely amazing! Well done, everyone!

Take care,

Mr Kyriacou
