Weekly Update-3/5/24

Posted: May 3, 2024 by: Mr Kyriacou (n.kyriacou) on: Beech Tree Blog

Hello everyone,

This week, in maths, we have continued our work on decimals. We have been focusing on comparing decimals, ordering decimals, and rounding decimals to whole numbers. The children have been doing fantastic with this unit of work and it’s great to see the huge increase in confidence.

In science, we have continued our unit of work on plants. This week, we have planned and set up an investigation. Our investigation revolves around whether the number of seeds planted in a pot will affect the way that it grows. The children understood what equipment was required and why, what could be changed (variable) and what will be kept the same in the experiment in order to keep it fair. We have one pot with 1 seed, one with 2 seeds, one with 4 seeds and one with 8 seeds. The children made their predictions (hypothesis) about what they think will happen for each one, and more importantly, gave good scientific reasoning behind why they think that (based on all their knowledge that they have learnt about plants so far). They will now observe and measure the height of each plant in each pot, and they will do this once a week and record their results as they go along.

In computing, our unit of work has revolved around networks and the internet. This week, the children were learning about what websites and webpages are, identifying the different features used on a website and then considering what sort of things you must think about before adding your own content to a website.

This week, we also had PCSO Sophie kindly come in to talk to the children about online safety.

Take care,

Mr Kyriacou
