Weekly Update-3/2/23

Hello everyone,
We've had another busy week. In maths, we have been focusing on multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100. We have discussed what is happening to numbers when we do this and we have focused on using our maths mats with our place value grids to show which way the numbers move and by how many places to the left or right. The children understood this concept quite quickly and it has really supported them with their work throughout the week. We have also started to look at some word problems that involve a combination of multiplying and dividing by 10 or 100 and the children have started to give some great mathematical explanations about how they have worked it out and also used their maths mats to PROVE that their calculations are correct. Well done everyone!
We are currently focusing on persuasive writing and looking at all the different features that are required to create a piece of writing that can successfully persuade. We have been looking at rhetorical questions, emotive language, exaggeration, alliteration and repetition. During our lesson on exaggeration, we discussed what it means to exaggerate, why people might do it, how it is effective in a persuasive piece of writing. As part of this lesson, and after looking and discussing some examples on the board, the children were tasked with creating their own sentence which used exaggeration. They were lots of super examples and the children enjoyed creating them.
As part of our science topic, we have been looking at what soil is made of, the properties of different soils and we have been working on creating our own compost bins, which the children have really enjoyed doing. Each bin also has several worms within each one and we have been discussing what role the worms will have and how it is beneficial.
Finally, we have also been creating our own papier mache volcanoes, which we will be painting and then erupting. The children worked really hard on these and are looking forward to painting and erupting them.
