Weekly Update 28.4.2022

Posted: Apr 28, 2022 by: K Atkinson (k.atkinson) on: Pear Tree Class Blog 2021- 2024

Another busy week has come to an end in Pear Class and there have been a lot of exciting things happening in school. This is our last week of our topic 'Yeadon Explorers' before we start our new topic of 'African Adventure' next week.

This half-term the year one pupils are having an additional music lesson every Monday morning with Mr Jennings. This week the children explored different musical instruments and played them in time to different pieces of music.

A lot of the children have been excited about the book fair being in school. We had a chance to browse the books on Tuesday afternoon and many children told me about the book that they ended up buying either before or after school. It was lovely to hear their conversations about different books as well as see them browsing the covers and reading the blurbs to make a choice about what book they would like to buy.

In phonics we recapped some phase 5 sounds that have already been taught, as well as begun to learn some alternative pronunciations of known graphemes (e.g. 'c' in 'city' and 'rice'). I have been very impressed with how quickly the children have picked up these alternative pronunciations and how many words they recognised straight away.

Yesterday, as part of a PSHE workshop, the children had a visit from Harold the giraffe! The focus of the workshop was 'My Wonderful Body' and the children learnt about the different organs in the body and all the different ways to look after their bodies (healthy eating, getting enough sleep, staying hydrated etc.) They had a lot of questions for Harold and found it hilarious when he came out of his travelling trunk!

I hope you all have a lovely bank holiday weekend and let's hope for some warmer weather next week!
