Writing our names using hieroglyphics
We wrote diary entries from the perspective of Egyptian slaves.
Here's an example by Kyra...
Dear diary,
I am helping to build a huge step pyramid in Giza for Rameses III. At the moment I am pulling the tobogan up the earth slope and placing the huge block of lime stone. It's so hot and I am sweating badly because the sun is beating down on me. I absolutely definitely hate my job! It's like being starved to death. You get so little food and water, and only one toilet break, it's so unfair! Now I am home in my wala. I am so exhausted, all I want to do is sleep.
We also wrote descriptive accounts, imagining we were
excavating an ancient tomb. This is by Polly...
I gently brushed away the last of the sand. This was it! I had discovered a tomb at last. I chipped a hole in a corner of the door. Then I put a candle inside. I saw many golden, glittering objects at the bottom of a flight of stairs.
“Can you see anything?” asked my workers.
“Yes, wonderful things,” was all I could manage to say. I chipped away at the rocky door until there was a hole big enough to climb through.
I slowly made my way down the stairs. It felt cold inside. It was dark and gloomy. I lit a candle. Cautiously I made my way along the chamber, feeling the crumbling walls and sweeping the candle this way and that. I smelt the musty air and the burning smell from my candle. Everything I touched felt damp.
I felt smooth gold under my fingers and suddenly touched another thing piled on top. After that I found my way into the annexe, which again was filled with glittering gold. Then I saw two statues. I jumped! Then I saw a sealed door. “The burial chamber must be behind it!” I thought.
I chipped away at it to find gold and jewels and eight coffins of gold holding the body and death mask of the dead king. I found yet another doorway to the treasury. Inside I saw the most amazing sight. It was filled with gold and jewels and secret spells. While we excavated everything I kept thinking what a wonderful discovery I had made.
